Chief Electrician - Land Rig
The Chief Electrician ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all electrical, electronic, and instrumentation systems on a 1500 HP land drilling rig and associated camp facilities. This role oversees power generation, SCR/VFD systems, motor control centers, instrumentation, and auxiliary equipment, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications, regulations, and HSE standards. The Chief Electrician provides leadership to minimize downtime and support uninterrupted drilling operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all rig and camp electrical systems (generators, SCR/VFD, MCCs, top drive/mud pump motors, lighting, instrumentation, HVAC, and emergency power).
Implement preventive and corrective maintenance schedules; maintain calibration and perform testing.
Monitor power generation, distribution, and system stability.
Lead Electrical Technicians and Helpers; assign tasks, provide training, and foster teamwork.
Ensure strict compliance with HSE policies, lock-out/tag-out procedures, and safety regulations.
Maintain accurate records, drawings, and documentation, support audits and regulatory inspections.
Manage electrical inventory, spare parts, and materials.
Identify opportunities for system improvements and operational efficiency.
Qualifications & Requirements:
8–10 years electrical experience in oil & gas drilling, with 5+ years in supervisory roles on land rigs (preferably 1500 HP).
Expertise in high/low-voltage systems, SCR/VFD, generators, MCCs, PLCs, instrumentation, and electrical protection systems.
Technical diploma/degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; valid trade certification/license.
Current safety certifications (H2S, First Aid/CPR, Firefighting); OEM rig system training preferred.
Strong leadership, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to work rotational field schedules, at heights, in confined spaces, and respond to electrical emergencies.
