Chief Mechanic -1500 HP Land Drilling Rig
The Chief Mechanic leads all mechanical operations on a 1500 HP land drilling rig, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of all mechanical systems. The role oversees preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, equipment inspections, and complex troubleshooting while maintaining compliance with company standards, OEM requirements, and HSE regulations. The Chief Mechanic plays a key leadership role in minimizing downtime and supporting continuous drilling operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee inspection, maintenance, and repair of all major rig systems, including diesel engines, draw works, mud pumps, rotary/top drive equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, compressors, and auxiliary equipment.
Ensure equipment operates within OEM specifications and safe working limits.
Manage and execute the Planned Maintenance System (PMS), including scheduled servicing and condition monitoring.
Lead root cause analysis and resolve equipment failures to reduce non-productive time (NPT).
Supervise and develop the mechanical crew; assign tasks and ensure performance standards.
Enforce strict HSE compliance, conduct JSAs, and promote safe work practices.
Coordinate with rig management to align maintenance with drilling operations.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, inventory control, and report documentation.
Qualifications & Requirements:
10–15 years of mechanical experience in oil & gas drilling, with significant experience on 1500 HP land rigs.
Proven supervisory experience in a senior mechanical role.
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, mud systems, draw works, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, and heavy rotating equipment.
Technical qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or Heavy Equipment Maintenance.
Valid HSE certifications (H2S, First Aid/CPR, Firefighting); OEM training preferred.
Strong leadership, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to work rotational schedules in remote drilling environments.
